Kavala, Greece – The Hidden Pearl of the Aegean

Kavala, Greece at a glance

Kavala is a seaside city in northern Greece, in the region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, built like an amphitheatre above the Aegean Sea. It is one of the oldest cities in Greece – the ancient Neapolis, where the Apostle Paul first set foot in Europe – and today it combines a lively harbour, a historic old town and some of the best beaches in the north.

In the old town of Panagia you will find the Byzantine fortress of Kavala, the Imaret and the house of Mehmet Ali, while the 16th-century Kamares aqueduct crosses the city centre. Just 15 km away lies Philippi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. See all attractions in Kavala.

Kavala is also the gateway to Thassos – ferries leave from Kavala and from nearby Keramoti – and the “Alexander the Great” airport is about 30 km away. Within an hour's drive there are dozens of beaches with clear water: see the beaches of Kavala, the small towns near Kavala and the best time to visit.

I live here, and on this site I share what I tell friends when they come to visit: where to eat (restaurants in Kavala), how to get around and where to park (transport), and what is really worth your time.

Kamares – the Aqueduct of Kavala

An impressive aqueduct over 270 meters long, its stone arches rising to about 25 meters - one of the most recognizable symbols of Kavala. A walk around Kamares easily combines with a visit to the old town and the nearby fortress.

Who writes this site

Kavala Greece is a guide to Kavala written by someone who spends a large part of the year in the town. My name is Theo, I have a home here and I manage more than 20 guest properties. Every season I answer the same questions: where to park, which beach is good for children, where to eat good fish. The site gathers them in one place, in Bulgarian and in English.
