Farewell, Mazonakis! Greek music loses another one of its legends

A star has passed away, a legend of Greek music! Another popular Greek performer has begun his heavenly journey.

The cause of death was a heart attack, reports the Greek publication “Proto Thema”. The signal to Greece’s National Emergency Center (EKAB) was sent from a private internal medicine clinic in the Athens district of Kolonaki, where Yorgos Mazonakis was staying. A paramedic arrived on the scene and immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Just a few minutes later, Mazonakis was transported by ambulance to Elpis Hospital. There, too, doctors tried to save the performer, but despite their efforts, his death was confirmed.

Who Was Giorgos Mazonakis?

His music

His first album, “Μεσάνυχτα και κάτι”, came out in 1993, and the breakthrough followed a year later with “Με τα μάτια να το λες”. The 1997 album “Παιδί της νύχτας” went platinum. Over the years he sang alongside Stamatis Gonidis, Notis Sfakianakis and Goin’ Through.

The last farewell

Giorgos Mazonakis died on 9 September 2026 at the age of 54. The funeral was held on 14 September: the service took place at the church of Agia Triada in Nikaia – the neighbourhood where he grew up – and he was then buried at the Third Cemetery of Athens. Thousands of people saw him off with applause in the streets.

Mazonakis ranks among the most popular Greek performers of today. Born in 1972 in Nikaia (Athens region), he began his music career in 1992, at just 20 years of age. He created some of his biggest hits, still world-famous today: Ζηλεύω (Zilevo) — “I’m Jealous”; Μη μου ζητάς — “Don’t Ask Me”; Εδώ — “Here”; Παιδί της νύχτας — “Child of the Night”; Ανήκω σε μένα — “I Belong to Myself”, and many others.
