Savvas
Savvas (Savvas Seafood, Σάββας) is the fish taverna on Kavala’s old harbor. It has been open since 1996 and calls itself the oldest seafood taverna there. I go for the fish – below is what I’ve eaten, what the bill comes to and what to know about reservations and parking.

What to order
I’ve eaten all kinds of fish here, with salad and dips on the side. The octopus and the calamari melt in the mouth too. There’s nothing I haven’t liked.
The menu has sea bass, sea bream, dentex, red mullet, sole, lobster and Kavala shrimp, plus specials depending on the day’s catch. There are also crabs, sea urchins, fried zucchini and, for those who don’t eat fish, grilled meat. As in any fish taverna, it’s best to ask what the fish of the day is.
Setting and service
The service is fast. The place has an indoor and an outdoor area; on the veranda with the white awning you sit looking out over the water.
Prices
The bill comes to around €15 per person on average, but it depends on who eats what. Fresh fish is usually priced by the kilo, so ask for the price before you order.
Getting there and parking
The address is Thasou 29, on the old harbor. Locals call the area Sfageia (Σφαγεία). It’s about 30 minutes on foot from the centre, or around €5 by taxi (2026 price). If you’re driving, there is parking.
Who it’s for
For anyone who has come to Kavala for fish and seafood and wants to eat it by the water. It works for families and for groups. The place also offers vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options, and it is wheelchair accessible.
Practical tips
- Reservation: I recommend one for Friday and Saturday. Without one it’s not a problem either – you wait 10–15 minutes on the side and a table frees up.
- When to go: there’s no better or worse time; it’s open all day.
- Table with a view: if you want to sit on the veranda by the water, say so when you book.
- How to book: by phone on +30 2510 225 505 or online through the restaurant’s website.
- Payment: they take both cards and cash.
